Removable dentures are prosthesis that replace the lost teeth and gums. They play an esthetic and functional role. They can be partial or complete, according to whether they replace all or some teeth. They are held on its position by other teeth, and by adapting to the maxillaries (complete dentures are only held by this means); implants can also be used for this purpose. 

Esthetics in complete removable dentures

It is very important to emphasize the importance of esthetics. After the loss of teeth, the maxillary bone undergoes resorption. As the teeth and their supporting bone give support to the lips and cheeks, the face acquires a looser appearance and wrinkles are accentuated. This is the typical ‘old’ looking. When designing the prosthesis, special care has to be taken to grant an adequate support to the soft tissues. It will give back the adequate outline to the face and reduce the wrinkles that develop around the lips, thus, restoring a younger appearance.

The correct selection and position of the teeth is also a central key for good results. They are chosen taking into account the basic contour of the face (rounded, square, triangular), dimension of the face, age, sex, personality, and special requirements of the patient.

In order to reach your objectives for dental treatment it is very important to keep in mind that the success of the outcom is related to the following key elements:

1)  Fluent communication with the dentist. A clear and concise  communication with the dentist helps to assure the outcome that you are seeking. To help you with this, Dr. Pelcman and key members of his professional staff are fluent in English.

2)  Understanding the limitations of the treatment, being realistic about expectations, and having a clear idea of what you want to achieve.

3)  Your anatomic features play a role in the treatment. An evaluation by the dentist is necessary.

Description of the treatment

This is a description of an ideal treatment for preparing a complete removable denture:

- First appointment: You will meet Dr. Pelcman and staff and get to know the facilities. You will also have a clinical and computerized evaluation of your case. Primary impressions are taken.

- Second appointment: Final impressions are taken.

- Third appointment: Record of registers and selection of teeth.

- Fourth appointment: Evaluation of the aesthetics. We recommend that if you came with someone else, to go accompanied with that person to that session. Try to have in mind a clear idea of what you want. If it is helpful, you may bring pictures.

- Fifth appointment: Installation and adjustments of the removable denture.
