Periodontal Disease

The relationship between periodontal diseases (gingivitis, periodontitis) and general health is being investigated for several decades and scientific evidence increasingly suggests that there is a strong connection between them and systemic conditions such as heart attacks, strokes and premature babies with low birthweight. "Periodontitis is an infectious disease caused by a specific group of microorganisms present in plaque that is manifested in the destruction of the tissues supporting the teeth (mainly the bone supporting the teeth) which, when not addressed promptly may lead to the loss of such parts, "explains Claudia Aponte Guzmán periodontist Clinic - Aponte. The initial form of the disease is known as gingivitis or gum inflammation, it does not exist in bone destruction. You must know that not all people are vulnerable to the same extent to suffer periodontitis, but it is neglected oral hygiene, leading to the accumulation of plaque, gingivitis all could eventually develop. But only certain people will progress to periodontitis. This is because there are certain genetic factors that predispose some individuals to develop the disease. "So it's important to understand the periodontitis as a disease which involves both specific pathogen and a susceptible host. While there are genetic factors involved in host response to this type of infection, there are also acquired risk factors or environmental factors that influence the onset and progression of the disease, "says the specialist. Here are some, but if in doubt ask your dentist or periodontist.
